An upgrade to the eastern side of Whāingaroa (Raglan) Wharf, giving boaties and paddlers better access to the water with a new pontoon, two fixed gangways and a third hinged gangway, plus a kayak ramp.

The work formed one part of a wider, community-driven plan to transform the wharf and harbour, alongside repairs to the existing wharf and a new western walkway — projects the Raglan community had been pushing for since 2019.

Because of the site's tidal range, the gangways needed to be longer than a standard design, so DCC engineered a solution tailored specifically to the location.

Piling for the new structures was carried out from a barge floated in specially for the project, and the pontoon itself arrived in three large pre-built sections, trucked to site, lifted into the water by crane and joined together on the water.

The gangway went in the same way, with prefabricated sections craned onto piles to link the pontoon to the new eastern walkway.

The new pontoon, gangways, kayak ramp and walkway opened to the Raglan community in mid-2023 with a dawn ceremony and karakia. This was a milestone moment in a project the community had been working toward for years, and one that set the standard for the western walkway upgrade that followed.

DCC delivered structural design and construction observation as sub-consultant to Bellingham Marine.

Project value: ~$800k
