The latest chapter in a long-running relationship between DCC and Algies Bay: failing historic armouring and strong community appetite for an upgrade came together in an 80-metre rock masonry seawall, drainage, retaining walls and new amenity areas. This work completed the southern side of the boat ramp seawall, following on from the northern side built some years earlier, and the finished wall now doubles as a place locals stop to walk, sit and take in the view.
The masonry stonework called for specialist techniques, working around tides and difficult ground conditions. Above it, a two-level path network now links the esplanade reserves, car park and playground.
Earthworks were managed carefully around existing wastewater lines and mature pōhutukawa, the boat ramp stayed open throughout, and an iwi cultural narrative and pou were incorporated to provide a cultural footprint for local iwi Ngāti Manuhiri.
DCC delivered design engineering, project management and consenting for the full upgrade.
